Where grandfather clocks got their name

At the George Hotel owned by the Jenkins was a floor clock which is what they were called at that time. That clock never lost time, until the Jenkins brothers died, and then it stopped. The clock was never fixed. While staying at the hotel, Henry Work heard the story of the clock. He wrote a song about it which starts, "oh my grandfather's clock was too tall..." The song became very popular and after that people started calling floor clocks, grandfather's clocks. Before all of this they were called long case or coffin clocks due to the size of the case they are in. For more information on grandfather clocks go here.
